PECO distributes electricity and natural gas to customers in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, and Montgomery counties, and electricity to the City of Philadelphia. In October 2000, PECO Energy and Unicom of Chicago merged to create Exelon Corporation, one of the nation's largest electric utilities with an electric and natural gas distribution customer base of approximately five million. Exelon is the largest nuclear operator in the United States, with more than 16,500 megawatts of nuclear capacity. PECO, a separate subsidiary of Exelon, is one of the region's most active civic supporters and largest employers.
